A Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. They, like so many other aspects of our lives, have both a positive and negative side. When acted upon with a reasonable sense of enthusiasm and/or purpose, they can help guide us to incredible achievements. We must remember […]

30 Day Challenge/Day 6: Opening to the Uneasy
When we really look at this idea of having an Uneasy feeling we normally consider the bad aspects of a particular moment. Instead, we should recognize that being uneasy is not only natural but actually very helpful. Since the earliest days of humanity, the approach of predators and incoming danger sets off alarms in the […]
30 Day Challenge/Day 5: Ease is not so Easy
If you have spent any real time with me, you will recognize I have a deep curiosity about words and their use. I truly appreciate how each is an expression of a thought, idea, and feeling. That they give identity and ultimately have incredible power on the human psyche. What I find frustrating with “American […]
30 Day Challenge/Day 4: Transforming Uneasy to Easy
We all encounter activities, events and individuals that give us either a sense of ease and comfort or a sense of unease and concern. I remember my first lesson walking into the school many years ago. I had a private introductory lesson and the training floor was blocked from view of the lobby but I […]
30 Day Challenge/Day 3: ACTION
Absolute Commitment To Improve Ourselves Now! I came up with this acronym in 1996 after being inspired by a motivational speaker about the importance of taking small steps in order to create success. 30 Day Challenge/Day 1: It’s ALL “Self Defense”
The first topic I choose to write about may be the most controversial as well as hardest to embrace. However if you read this through, ideally you will come to understand my viewpoint. We should measure our training for improvement through Five Primary Fitness Levels (to be addressed in […]
Fun for all ages!
The martial arts is fun for all ages… Really? Are you sure? Come on I’ve seen Karate Kid and Mr. Miyagi had Danial-san wax on/wax off so much that his arms must have hurt, and it sure didn’t look like fun. Our answer is YES… on both accounts. FUN and ALL AGES! As long as […]
Try It You’ll Like It!
“Sure, I will…” is the sarcastic answer most are thinking of when reading a comment like “Try it you’ll like it!” Think back when you were a kid, “trying” meant something that didn’t taste good, was a strange color (mostly green), or involved cleaning. As an adult, “trying” is still about perceptions: likes/dislikes, helping/hurting, and […]
Makes Your Students Better
As the student progresses through the grades, they start feeling the expectations of life descend upon them. They don’t know how to be strong within themselves to say “no”, “yes”, or even to state their case. They don’t know that they can defend themselves. They don’t have an outlet that allows them to just be their original self, and they need one!
